Respite Retreat sign in the midst of snow and trees

A weary, depleted sojourner traversing a trail. An unexpected invitation. A door. The Triune God who has been present and waiting all along.

Elizabeth has walked the harsh winter trail for months, worn past the point of endurance, when a weatherworn sign appears where the map shows nothing: Respite Retreat.

Inside, she meets Pop by the fire, who welcomes her as though he has always known her. Ruah, the ever-present Spirit of God, draws out prayers she didn’t know she carried. And then there’s Brother—the One who has walked beside her through the suffering, even in the silence. Father, Son, and Spirit, each meeting her in turn, together providing rest and renewal.

Room by room, moment by moment, Elizabeth wrestles with the unspoken questions, releases her vigilance, offers her lament, and learns to trust the rest that is offered. She lays down her burdens. What she finds will not undo her winter—but God will renew her hope and transform her sense of belonging.

This devotional is an imaginative, allegorical story of respite found on the winter trail. It includes Scriptures, reflection questions, and journal pages. Consider it an invitation to a meaningful conversation with the Triune God about your own story, your own questions, and your own winter season of suffering.

“After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” (1 Peter 5:10 NASB)
